PERFORMING A SEARCH

The best way to get started with Databases is to look at a simple example, play with it for a bit, and then find out how the code was created and put together on a web page. With this in mind, go ahead and click on the 'Search' button below, leaving the input box blank. (The results will display in a new window, so don't worry about finding your way back here).

Now try doing a search on a specific name like Smith or Smart. This database is set up to search on the LASTNAME field, and returns any record pertaining to that criteria. Use the name "Smith" and you will get a return on all records for "Smith" and anything else with the name "Smith" in it.

You now have an idea of how a database searches and returns records. To build a searchable database catalog, you will need 3 things:
  • An existing Database, preferably created in Microsoft Access 97 or 2000, or you will need to build one from scratch.
  • The initial Search page, with the search button built into either an existing web page, or a new page altogether.
  • A return template, the page where the results of the search will be displayed. This page can be as plain or as elaborate as you wish to make it.
